Good Tidings

Updated: Mar 2, 2021

The holiday season for Filipinos is the busiest time of the year – from decorating, shopping, cooking, and inviting relatives. This is the time to think about how we can give back to our loved ones.

Some families have traditions during holidays: the Simbang Gabi, Christmas carols blasted everywhere, and the streets lined with parols. Some people all over the world come together to support great causes. However, this year will be different given our present circumstances.

COVID-19 has radically changed our lives. There are many ways to give back this holiday season that will have a priceless impact on others. Since we must limit in-person contacts, I know I can make a difference by supporting small businesses and giving back to our delivery workers.

It may not seem a lot, but it is to those who are just starting. Instead of going for a drive-thru and ordering from popular fast-food chains, why not look for newly opened restaurants around your area? It is also less time-consuming.

Restaurants have been struggling heavily since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many are also reliant on third-party delivery apps, tipping our food server and delivery workers with any amount is the least we can do. With so many businesses closing due to COVID-19, they need us more than ever.

While these new normal celebrations will be different from what we are normally used to, it does not mean that they will be any less jolly! There is joy in the act of giving when it is done with pure motives. Let us support one another. Give back to the less privileged, spend time with loved ones, and keep having a positive outlook about life.

A lot has changed but this holiday season is a reminder of why we should never take things for granted. To put it all together, always remember that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Everyone deserves some recognition for pulling through during what might just be the toughest year yet.
